Transcribed on your Mac

Riff turns each take into text on your Mac, with the engine you choose in Settings. Your recordings and transcriptions are not uploaded.

Apple Speech

Apple Speech is the default. It uses the speech recognition built into macOS, in the language your Mac is set to. Riff starts transcribing while you talk, so the text is ready soon after you let go.

Cohere Transcribe

Cohere Transcribe is a speech recognition model from Cohere that Riff runs on your Mac. When you choose it in Settings, Riff downloads the model once from Hugging Face, about 1.5 GB, and shows the progress. After that it transcribes without a network connection.

What stays on your Mac

Riff saves each take as an audio file in its folder in Application Support, and keeps the text in its history. Neither leaves your Mac.

Riff sends crash reports, performance data, and whether features succeeded by default, so problems can be found and fixed. Turn off Share diagnostics in Settings to stop them.
